It’s currently 105 degrees (Fahrenheit) in Huntington Beach. I don’t recall it ever getting this hot. The weather report estimated it would only reach a high of 95 degrees today. Even that is abnormally scalding.
When I saw the poor mailman driving around in his open-air vehicle walking in the sun to each mailbox to deliver our mail, I knew I had to help somehow. I had put a bottle of water in the freezer the other day to use as an ice roller on my foot. I had forgotten about it until now. I grabbed that frozen bottle plus one from the fridge and promptly scampered out into the heat to give him both.
“Thank you, thank you,” he said gratefully as he immediately reached for them. He had a huge smile on his face.
“You’re welcome,” I replied as I hurried myself back into the cooler 82 degree house.
I hope mailmen and mailwomen keep some sort of cooler in their trucks for days like this. I can’t imagine working outside in this heat. For all the men and women out there who do laborious work out in the sun…God bless you. May you have plenty of cool water to quench your thirst, air conditioning when you’re done, and a cool home to relax in upon your return.
It also makes me feel grateful that I live here, that it’s only one day a year and that I get to stay inside. Many around the world work in various uncomfortable and health-risk situations. I live a truly blessed life.
Stay hydrated and keep cool out there, my friends!
